This course aims to build and expand students’ knowledge and skills in international and foreign legal research. Students will use specialized tools and resources to research international treaties and agreements, U.S. treaty law and practice, decisions of international courts and tribunals, official documents of international organizations (United Nations, European Union, WTO, etc.), and legislation and court decisions of selected common law and civil law jurisdictions. Students will also gain practical experience with methods, procedures and strategies for researching private international law, international and regional human rights systems, investment and commercial arbitration, and other topics.

Although some reading and lecturing is involved, students build and develop research skills primarily by working through research simulations via in-class exercises and take-home assignments. There are multiple opportunities for self-evaluation as well as extensive feedback on a regular basis from the instructor.

Students do not need to take Advanced Legal Research I in order to enroll in this course.

The course will be graded credit / no credit.
