30% Other (The writing assignment is a brief--which will be argued at the end of class--which is done one section at a time, with personal edits and suggestions given each week for each section. The "other" is for the oral argument, which will account for improvement during the semester in addition to the final argument. In addition, if students attend appellate arguments, the form they prepare on that experience will be used toward the higher grade if they are between grades. )

Course Continuity
Students are encouraged to stay home if you are ill or experience flu-like symptoms. If you miss a class for any reason, it is still your responsibility to make up the work missed.

I offer the following to students who miss class due to illness:

- If you are absent, due to illness or some other unavoidable circumstance, email me and I can ask for volunteers among your classmates to share their notes with you.

- I will make PowerPoint slides or other class materials routinely available on the course site to everyone in the class.

- When you are better, please make an appointment to meet with me and I will review/answer questions about what you missed.

This section of Appellate Advocacy is hands-on and practical. It emphasizes oral advocacy skills and teaches students to craft arguments and defend them in writing and on their feet. Students turn in writing assignments (which are reviewed but not graded and which will be part of the final brief) and argue every week. Students develop their own arguments, in conjunction with their classmates, and they will do the research to determine the best way to position their arguments. Class is limited to 12 students.

Courts and the Judicial System Learning outcomes: Demonstrate a core understanding of both substantive and procedural issues in the operation of our legal system; Perform legal analysis in the context of procedural issues and the judicial process; Communicate effectively on topics related to procedure and the judicial process; Demonstrate an understanding of how procedural issues and the judicial process affect all other area of our legal system.
