This course on contemporary consumer law considers statutory and common law approaches to transactions between firms and individuals. How is advertising regulated? What does it mean for business practices to be "unfair" or deceptive? How do common law approaches in contract and tort sit alongside the statutory frameworks at the federal and state levels? Topics include disclosure, arbitration, privacy, credit discrimination, real property, education, cars, and debt collection.

Our coverage of the law of consumer transactions and consumer protection will be informed by a number of critical and complementary perspectives, from disciplines including psychology, history, and sociology. Grading will be based on an in-class presentation (25%) and an essay exam (75%).
