This course will introduce students to the working of copyright through an examination of the system's basic principles, rules, and institutions. Topics will include: the justifications for copyright law, copyrightable subject matter, authorship and co-authorship, the rules and principles of copyrightability, the nature and scope of copyright's exclusive rights, copyright infringement, fair use, and various remedies for infringement. The course will also have occasional guest speakers with expertise on different aspects of the copyright system. The final grade for this course will be based on an in-class final exam (90%) and class participation (10%).
