This is a core course in Penn Law’s 1L sequence that introduces students to fundamental criminal law concepts. The course examines a broad range of topics, including justifications for punishment, components of criminal liability, inchoate crimes, justification/excuse defenses, definitions of specific offenses, and limits on the operation of criminal law. To advance students’ understanding of criminal law, we will use a combination of lectures, case discussions, and in-class exercises.
