Whether working at a law firm, in-house, or for the government or a non-profit organization, lawyers can face a variety of crises on behalf of their client or organization. From global cybersecurity attacks or government raids to senior management scandals, shareholder activism, or company-threatening product recalls, a superior legal response and the best strategic advice can mitigate the short- and long-term consequences in any crisis. Led by a former federal prosecutor who currently practices in this area, this class will cover real-life crises and how they have impacted both the organizations and individuals involved. We will study both crisis prevention and crisis management from a legal perspective and train students how to think through risk management and future liability issues. Students will be asked to consider questions including: Who should be consulted during a crisis when every second counts? How can attorney-client privilege be impacted by these decisions? What information should be communicated internally and externally, and when? How can you, as a lawyer, best assess legal risk and coordinate strategic, multifaceted responses to crises in real-time? Students will have the opportunity to respond to hypothetical crises and navigate the risks and rewards in different scenarios. Given the nature of the in-class work and assignments, attendance is mandatory. The bootcamp will be graded credit/fail.
The bootcamp will meet Friday, November 15, Saturday, November 16, Friday, November 22, and Saturday, November 23, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
