One vision of law understands it as disconnected from society, existing on a different plane from social movements and changing mores. But this vision is false generally, and nowhere is it more false than in the Supreme Court's equal protection jurisprudence. There, the traces of identity-based social movements are clear. This seminar will conduct a study of the linkages between law and society by examining connections between the Court's sex equality jurisprudence and Disney Princess movies, mediated by feminist theory and history. Material for a typical week will consist of one or more equal protection decisions, one or more movies, and selected readings in feminist theory. Students will be expected to come to class prepared to discuss weekly assigned questions and to raise their own; some students will be selected to lead discussion each week. Grading is based on class participation and a capstone project, which may be a conventional paper or may be creative, with instructor approval.
