Penn Carey Law offers an externship with the Civil Division of the US Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia for 3L students. Students must apply for this Gittis externship through the Externship Program Office, and must submit their application materials within the stated deadline. Externs will engage in and observe all phases of work of the civil side of the U.S. Attorney's Office. This will include both affirmative and defensive litigation on behalf of federal government agencies and will likely involve the extern in discovery or trial proceedings. Affirmative litigation involves investigations and legal actions concerning fraud on the United States, and to bring civil penalty and injunctive actions enforcing a wide variety of federal agency laws and regulations such as the environmental laws, predatory lending, and drug diversion. Defensive litigation involves defense of the government, its agencies, and its employees in civil litigation including tort cases and Title VII cases alleging discrimination in hiring and employment practices by agencies of the United States.

A security clearance must be obtained prior to the start of the semester's work. This is a 7-credit externship that will require 21 hours per week (students work directly with the US Attorney’s Office to set a mutually convenient schedule of hours in the office). Students will also have the opportunity to meet with their assigned faculty supervisor every other week to help reflect on their externship experience.
