Immigration Law is a very complex yet very personal and human area of the law. This course will provide an overview of the various immigration laws that govern the movement of persons from other countries into the US and give you, the student, an understanding of not just the complexity of the laws but also an inner glimpse into the reality of what it means to practice immigration law in the year 2022. We will cover the general principles of constitutional and administrative law primarily focused on the application to immigration law and how the governing statutes and regulations are applied to real-life situations facing individuals seeking to immigrate to the U.S. The focus of this course is therefore more on the practical aspects of immigration law although, inevitably, policy will play a role throughout the course.

As my background is as a practitioner with extensive experience in business and family immigration, we will focus more heavily on those areas but will also touch upon all of the various areas of immigration law, including deportability grounds, relief from removal, humanitarian relief, and asylum and withholding of removal claims.

My goal is to have an interactive class insofar as this is a very stimulating topic that, especially in the last several years, has taken center stage in the news and political thought. There will be a final take home exam at the end of the course but class participation will also be considered in the final grading.

Attendance is required. If you are ill or have an emergency that requires you to miss class, please contact me and I can provide you the recording and any other information provided at that class.
