In this course, we will explore how litigation has been used over the last several decades to effect social change, and how litigation may be used to effect such change in the future. We also will explore alternatives to litigation, and discuss when these alternatives may be preferable to litigation. The course will cover all manner of social issues, including those involving immigration, employment discrimination, gender, education, and more. We will examine the merits and pitfalls of various procedural tools, such as class actions, multidistrict litigation, settlements, and legislative solutions at the local, state, and national levels. At the end of the course, each student will prepare a PowerPoint presentation about a particular social change that he or she wishes to see in the world, and the manner in which he or she proposes to achieve it.

Perspectives on the Law Learning outcomes: Demonstrate an understanding of how the law affects, and is affected by, the individual course topic; Perform legal analysis in the context of the individual course topic; Communicate effectively on the legal and other aspects of the individual course topic; Demonstrate the ability to use other disciplines to analyze legal issues relevant to the individual course topic, including economics, philosophy, and sociology, as appropriate.
Equity and Inclusion Learning outcomes: Demonstrate a core understanding of the varied legal aspects of equity and inclusion; Perform legal analysis in the context of topics related to equity and inclusion; Communicate effectively on the legal aspects of equity and inclusion; Demonstrate an understanding of how equity and inclusion are connected to and affected by a wide variety of legal and regulatory structures and doctrines.
