Organizations today must handle IP-related risks and assets amid advancing technologies, complex supply chains, and global competition. Leaders and aspiring leaders across various fields—engineering, technology, life sciences, design, compliance, and business—need to make decisions impacting IP rights. This course prepares students to identify and mitigate legal risks, create effective IP protection strategies, capitalize on IP opportunities from innovations, promote innovation and IP rights, work in interdisciplinary teams, consult with legal counsel, and manage valuable IP assets responsibly. Iconic products—from Apple’s iPhone to Zippo lighters—provide compelling case studies; they illustrate key principles of IP law and best practices for protecting and promoting technology and design innovations.
Past success stories (and failures) inform future strategies and reveal insights: ¿ How is a product’s commercial advantage and differentiation best protected and sustained? ¿ When is strategic patenting ideally combined with a complimentary cocktail of other IP rights? ¿ What processes and practices must organizations adopt to integrate IP and innovation strategies? ¿ When is IP competitive intelligence useful for promoting technology innovation and ideation?
Students use interactive case studies to prepare for enabling their organizations, whether global corporations, entrepreneurial ventures, academic institutions, or government offices—to protect IP assets, respect others' IP rights, promote innovation, and integrate IP and innovation strategies. Course materials include book chapters, articles, court decisions, and granted federal IP rights supporting the case studies.
